Ian Deterling is a composer of aesthetically intriguing works for varied instrumentation. Blending tradition with contemporary practice, his music engages audiences by being authentic, relevant, and memorable.
Deterling’s works have been performed nationally and internationally, most notably by members of prestigious organizations such as the London Symphony Orchestra, the São Paulo State Symphony, the National Symphony Orchestra of Taiwan, and the San Antonio Symphony. His works and arrangements for educational ensembles are frequently performed at high schools and colleges as well as by amateur community bands, orchestras, and ensembles all around the world.
Deterling earned his Bachelor of Science in Music at the University of Wisconsin-Superior in Superior, Wisconsin and his Master of Music in Composition from Stephen F. Austin State University in Nacogdoches, Texas.

Notes
Trio in G Minor, Op. 21 is a five-movement work for clarinet, trumpet, and bass trombone. The movements are loosely structured like a rondo; movements I. Andante, III. Adagio, and V. Vivacissimo are based on variations of a primary melody. Movements II. Adagio and IV. Allegro vivace are constructed from entirely different melodies and motifs. The mixing of different styles and references of various composers create a unique canvas that displays a wide range of emotion. A list of influential composers this piece pays homage to includes: Johan Sebastian Bach, Johannes Brahms, Johan de Meij, Antonín Dvorák, Paul Dukas, Bernard Herrmann, Gustav Holst, James Horner, Pyotr Tchaikovsky, Hans J. Salter, Howard Shore, Frank Skinner, and Frank Zappa.

Haha, thanks! I think that might be a result of growing up watching old black-and-white horror films. I know Max Steiner and Franz Waxman are fairly well-known names (at least in film scores). Are you at all familiar with Frank Skinner, Hans J. Salter, Charles Previn - or Heinz Roemheld? They worked on many of the Dracula, Frankenstein, Wolf Man, and Mummy movies of the 1930s and 40s.

I like this as an orchestral work. I think a top notch conductor could pull it off with the correct verve. I am 90% certain that this is an utterly pliable work in terms of volume and speed control. Solidly written for sheer tonal interest, proper instrumentation, not one damn bad note or boring moment in it. I think it is over too quickly.
Thank you so much! It definitely has a different 'flavor' as an orchestral work vs. wind ensemble. A bit more cinematic, perhaps... I am planning on adapting the entire concerto for orchestra - just worked on this concertino (the last movement + some extra bits) for now. I hope to get a recording of it soon!

Absolutely! I have a number of duets that I think would work well as a Trumpet and English Horn duet. Or - perhaps a new duet!

Wonderful piece! Nice and medieval chirpiness to it! I definitely get the old castle feel. I myself have been writing for woodwinds recently , I've got two finished pieces and some more on the way - I was wondering if you could give me some advice on how to write better for woodwind trio or quartet?
